Synopsis

“The budget is the single most important policy document local government adopts.” How many times have elected officials heard this statement, and how many elected officials actually believe that this is the case? Does the budget, and the budgeting process itself actually help policymakers to easily and understandably translate their decisions into actions that move their community forward? Or has budgeting become an accounting exercise at best, leaving the connection to policymaking questionable and unclear? Learn about the basics of budgeting from an experienced Elected Official and Finance Director team. They will provide insights and an explanation of the basics of the budget and budgeting process to help you gain confidence in your role as an elected official. After learning exactly what the budget is and understanding the data contained within it, this training then moves into the power of the data, and how this data – now useful information- is used to inform decision making about resource allocation in municipalities. We will look at how to think about the future of the city, and how to connect priorities and the results cities desire with the resources needed to achieve them.
